Way back when it was spring, I was planning on submitting a piece for Somerset Studio’s ‘winter’ theme. I started creating this paper that I was going to use as a background for….something.

I wasn’t able complete the background paper, let alone the project itself, in time to submit it. As a matter of fact, I only just finished my background paper within the last couple weeks.

So here it is….

I wanted to create a spare but layered look using black, white, and ivory as my palette. I started with a piece of watercolor paper, and sprinkled some coffee on it to start (gets rid of that blank white paper staring back at me). Next came pieces of paper I tore from a pamphlet from Opera Philadelphia, which was ivory, black, and grey, with a little red. After that I added layer upon layer upon layer of paint (Liquitex Basics), stamping (using found stamps like corks, pencil erasers, and small plastic lids), pretty tape (Tim Holtz), glitter glue (Tim Holtz), German scrap, and lace. Lots of layers. I think I got a little carried away….

I had always intended for this background paper to be cut into smaller pieces, so I added the German scrap and lace with that in mind.

Here are a couple pictures…these show the paper I tore from the Opera Philadelphia pamphlet:

I’ve now decided to make an accordion book, which I have never done before. For years now I’ve wanted to make a project incorporating some of the lines from Tori Amos’ song Winter. I thought that would be fitting with this paper and its original intention.

So that is my current project. At least the one that I am focusing on, since I have at least five other projects started!

The new issue of Greencraft magazine is now available…with my article on creating bows from magazine pages! I love how the article looks – the muted colors are so pretty. See for yourself…

There are some other pretty cool things in this issue, but my mom borrowed my copy and of course I can’t remember what other articles I liked.

Check it out if you have the chance. Thanks for stopping by!

I miss my beads. So I decided to make beadwork my “car/vacation project”. I used to always use my own designs, but these days I lean toward making projects from magazines, which is what these bracelets are. The design and creation are simple, and I love how they look.

These bracelets were designed by Nancy Zellers, and were featured in an article in the June 2007 issue of Bead & Button magazine.

I made these while traveling to and vacationing in Beach Haven NJ last week. I plan on making two more bracelets – perhaps a little excessive, as I’m keeping them all for myself! But I really love these beautiful cube beads, and I’m enjoying making the bracelets. Plus we have two more car trips in August/September, and I need something to do on those long rides.

Do you have any projects you work on in the car or on vacation? I would love to hear about them!

It feels like it’s been forever since I posted…I don’t think I’ve ever gone this long. Things have been a bit crazy in April – I have a new position at work which requires some after-hours work just to keep up with everything. I’ve hardly done anything creative. I really want to get back on track with my artistic goals.

Some good news…my recycled magazine page bows will be published in an upcoming issue of Greencraft magazine! I was very happy to receive that news…now I just need to write the article.

I mailed my bows – yay! I feel good about them. I hope the editors do too!

However I received my encouragement cards in the mail yesterday – they were declined. I was disappointed. I thought they were really good. oh well.

I’ve had a tray of half-finished jewelry projects sitting on my work table for a while. And by a while I mean at least a year. I was tired of looking at it. All those projects mocking me! So I went through them last Saturday and decided what I really wanted to finish. I decided to rework a couple projects because I don’t feel inspired by them anymore. But now I have a reduced pile of projects, and they are projects that I am excited to work on.

I finished my “vintage glam bows”. From pages ripped out of magazines to pretty little bows ready to top a handmade gift. I’m so glad I’m done! Now my least favorite part…typing up instructions, packaging, and mailing. These are going to Stampington, in hopes the editors will like them enough to publish them. I hope they like my bows…I know I do! And they’re just so pretty!

Here are some photos, showing the gesso’d & stamped magazine page strips as well as the finished product…

Continuing with the tradition I started on my 40th birthday, I bought myself a birthday gift. Jewelry, of course. And continuing with tradition I chose to support an artist on Etsy. When I saw this beautiful necklace by Danita, featuring her drawing of Marie Antoinette, I knew I had to have it. I am very familiar with Danita’s work, since she is a regular in the Stampington magazines I obsess over. Her lovely figures are simple, yet alluring and mysterious. And the eyes! Amazing.

I just adore my new necklace!
